Earthworms do it in the 69 position. Male bees sacrifice their penises to impregnate the queen. Mantises "give head" literally.
These are just a few of the weirdly fascinating sex rituals of insects showcased in Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno, a flashy series of short films commissioned by the Sundance Channel. Awash in vivid colors and shot in high-definition, the collection of one-to-two-minute vignettes is aimed at the emerging "fourth-screen" market of video-ready phones and handheld devices.
Making her debut as a director, Rossellini also conceived, wrote, and stars in the environmentally-conscious shorts, which screened at this year's Sundance and Berlin International Film festivals. For fans of her work with David Lynch, the surreal humor of Rossellini-as-housefly mounting her paper cut-out insectoid lover is irresistible.
The entire series of eight films premiered May 5th on Sundancechannel.com and will air on the Sundance Channel in July.
