Consciousness Convergences: Festivals and Conferences

Each year, the number of large events shaped by a transformational intention grows ever larger. They take place at all points across the globe. Many are EDM festivals or mega-concerts, where community emerges from the dance floor. Others are conferences dedicated to an aspect of the science of consciousness. Some are massive yoga festivals. And then, of course, there's Burning Man and the many regional convenings inspired by a similar sense of creative community. These scenes feed one another, inspiring a spiritual underground that is making the connection between visionary experience and social engagement.

Here we offer a directory of recommended events for the coming year. We'll be adding more to this list as dates and locations are finalized. Thanks to Graham St. John, Mark Heley, Jeet-Kei Leung, and Julian Reyes for sharing their expertise. If you want to suggest a listing, email us at consciousconvergences (at) evolver.net.

When: 07/01/13 - 07/07/13
What: The first Rainbow Gathering took place in Colorado in 1972, and Rainbow Family has continued to gather every year in the National Forests of North America and around the world. Although smaller, regional Gatherings take place throughout the year, Nationals always takes place during the week of July 1-July 7, attracting between 10,000 and 25,000 people annually. This year's Nationals will be held in the state of Montana; the exact location will be determined at a Spring Council in June. Many people elect to arrive at the Gathering site several weeks early and stay several weeks afterward to set up and then break down this temporary woodland city, which is constructed from a mixture of imported materials and the resources found at the site, such as fallen trees, stones, and clay. The population peaks during the pinnacle of the Gathering on July 4, beginning with a morning silence that is broken by a community prayer for world peace and followed by a full day of (acoustic) music, dancing, feasting, and celebration. Rainbow Gatherings are multi-generational and radically inclusive: everyone is invited, everyone is fed, and no tickets are required. The city runs on the principle of communal collaboration with everyone bringing and giving what time and resources they have. Food is donated to the many pop-up kitchens that are responsible for feeding the Gathering over the course of its duration, free of charge. Stages are built for performances, ovens for pizza baking, shade structures for skill sharing, and shrines for creative expression and contemplation. Artwork and costumes abound. The use of money to buy or sell anything is taboo, and prohibited items include alcohol, firearms, and sound amplifiers. At the close of the Gathering, Rainbow Family works to restore the environment to conditions better than found by burying compost piles, covering fire pits, and reseeding walking paths.

SEPTEMBER, 2013

Hyperion Music & Arts Festival
Where: Spencer, IN
When: 09/05/13 - 09/07/13
What: Hyperion the Greek Lord of Light was re-imagined as a music & arts festival in 2012 at Stable Studios in Spencer, IN. Herm Productions took their stage lighting design skills to the next level and scaled their creativity over an entire festival. The comfortable grounds of Stable Studios became the new home for one of the Midwest’s most fun festivals. They invited the best jam-electronic bands from the Midwest, sprinkled in some folk & bluegrass, and surrounded it all with visual artists of all sorts. Musicians, painters, aerialists, Poi dancers, hoopers, and beautiful Midwestern people came together for a meeting of minds and souls. The air at Stable Studios sprung to life with light & sound. The forest and pond were splashed with aural and visual stimulation as the stages rocked all day then raged all night. Now, in their 2nd year, they are lifting everything even higher. All new staging areas will expand the grounds and open the possibilities even farther for the amazing collision of music & art. With an even stronger lineup, more art installations, more pond illumination, and even more beautiful people, Hyperion Music & Arts Festival will fully blossom in 2013.
