Parashakti’s Dance f Liberation Dance * Ritual * Live DJ and Special Guest- Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Shanna Lee.
Parashakti & Gatekeepers, Jivamukti Yoga Teachers Sandhiferreira (Friday, February 8) and Shanna Lee (Friday, January 18) lead participants into the realms of Dance of Liberation; a Jivamukti Yoga class leading into a Yogic TranceDance Dancers ride the wave of sacred rhythm guided by Globesonic/ DJ Fabian Alsultany. By use of healing sounds, hypnotic percussive rhythms, Yogic transformational breathing techniques and the use of sensory deprivation through blindfolding while dancing, the ceremony takes the dancer into ‘trance’ state that promotes physical emotional release and spiritual awakening. Through this transformational fusion of exploring the essence of spirit, dance, breath work and contemporary shamanism, we can access ancient wisdom and healing. This communal ceremony allows dancers to journey with clear intent and liberate their inner light. The use of blindfolds help shed inhibitions and heightens awareness, allowing dancers to go on a “vision quest”, moving them to deeper states of consciousness and closer to their soul’s purpose. Participants are ritually purified, uniting their heart, mind and spirit. All committed to the spirit of love, unity, healing, spiritual awakening and celebration of life! Through ecstatic dance and enthralling rhythms, we are able to bypass the limitations of the ego mind and connect to the mind of our heart. We dance our power, unlock and liberate our dreams! Speaker Bio: Bio – Temple Bhajan Band The Temple Bhajan Band is a group of devotional chanters that tours Southern California’s Yoga Studios, Festivals, Retreats, and various social events. They have been together for over 8 years. Recently at festivals and other engagemnets, their blend of music has been coined as ” Kirtan Dance Party”. While Sura sings to the accompaniment of the harmonium, he leads the rest of the members on instruments such as the sitar, tamboura, kartals, flute, ektar, cello, djiembe, and mrdunga drum in a dynamic symphony that creates the ” Kirtan Dance Party”. The Temple Bhajan Band plays ancient Vedic bhajans, which include mantras and chants from spiritual India. Many of the chants are done in a responsive fashion where the audience can participate and experience the purifying pleasure of the chanting.

Erotic Poetry Lounge
Erotic Poetry Lounge The sexual tension in the room is thick at this one-of-a-kind erotic poetry lounge where the readings are as succulent as the atmosphere. With a different theme each month this sensual salon is taken to the streets as people find out what limits Eros plays in their lives — an then write about it. The lines between imagination and experience blur as people “literally” expose their encounters and push the limits of their creativity. Whether it’s to listen or to read come be a part of this orgasmic evening where prose, love, sex and verse inextricably entwine. This month’s theme is: A Kiss Before Tithing. Write and read aloud about your most “sinful” encounters with Eros in sacred spaces. Details: Aphrodisiac elixirs and delectable treats will be served to complement your savory and sultry desires. If you want to be guaranteed a slot to read please call or email to reserve. Both fictional and non-fictional prose accepted.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 5th Annual Anti-Hunger Serve-A-ThonSat 1/19 – Mon 1/21 (9AM
Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. by doing your charitable turn for those less fortunate. Join New Yorkers on January 19, 20, and 21, 2008 in celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday by partaking in the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) 5th Annual Anti-Hunger Serve-A-Thon. The event’s goal is to honor Dr. King’s legacy by encouraging New Yorkers to make his birthday “a day on, not a day off.” As Dr. King worked against poverty and apathy, New Yorkers are invited to do the same. MLK is similar to a walk-a-thon but instead of walking you’re performing a service to help pantries and kitchens meet their immediate needs. We are also building long-term capacity to help low-income New Yorkers move “beyond the soup kitchen” towards self-sufficiency, which is why we encourage you to ask your friends, family and co-workers for donations in honor of the service you will do. We will be placing servers at selected food pantries and/or soup kitchens on Saturday, Jan. 19, Sunday, Jan. 20, and/or Monday, Jan. 21. The time commitment is flexible and is meant to fit within a busy schedule. Service opportunities will be available in all five boroughs. Participants will conduct a wide variety of functions, including: preparing and serving hot meals at soup kitchens; unloading, sorting, inventorying, packaging, and distributing groceries at food pantries; cleaning, painting facilities, and constructing new storage and service spaces; and conducting Food Stamp and School Breakfast outreach by distributing materials to clients. Volunteers with a professional background will also learn about how they can use their skills on a long-term basis to help agencies feed more people and move clients toward self-sufficiency. Skills currently in high demand are marketing, accounting and financial management, technology and computer skills, and fundraising. Hunger in New York City is a serious and increasing problem, and feeding programs are in dire need of volunteers. The Coalition Against Hunger’s 2005 survey showed 81 percent of programs have no full-time paid staff, 60 percent have no paid staff at all, and only about 5 percent have three or more employees. To register contact Andrea Dispenza 212-825-0028 ext 202, adispenza@nyccah.org . The Coalition Against Hunger is an umbrella group for the more than 1,200 charitable kitchens and pantries citywide–and the more than one million low-income New Yorkers forced to use them to feed their families. More information about the Coalition Against Hunger and hunger in New York City is available at http://www.nyccah.org
