From living next door to the Grateful Dead to a 80s new wave band with iconic guitarist Nels Cline to the psychedelic music, and spoken word stream Radio EarthRites to famed acid blotter art, Gwyllm Lwydd exemplifies a certain kind of renaissance man receiving too little attention in the media, and perhaps in history as well.
Our self-knowing and awareness hold the key to the cosmic riddle at a point where subjectivity is also objective. We know the source because it never separated from us.
It was here at the Ranch’s grand 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Summer of Love that we chose to investigate, worship, and sip up the surviving spirit of the 60’s, especially now under the shadow of the Trump regime.
Rather than just enhancing current human thinking skills, is the neurosingularity (the idea that future human brains will surpass ours of today) also likely to increase the kinds and number of our brain-based information systems? How might psychedelics contribute?
It was infuriating that the solution to much of life’s angst had always been hidden in plain sight if only the veil could have been lifted. The fights I could have sidestepped, the conflicts and squabbles, the overwhelming enormity of self-inflicted suffering that could have been avoided didn’t bear thinking about.
These days, most of the popular media that address the future paint a fairly dismal picture of our possibilities. For me it is a writer’s responsibility to hold out some hope.
The notoriety of DMT as a perilously mad trip was amplified in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, as author Tom Wolfe related an episode where one of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters was administered DMT at Timothy Leary’s expansive new digs in Millbrook, New York. It was the summer of 1964.
As the LSD and DMT met, they dissolved my body into a hundred-thousand electric bees and with the Snap, Crackle and Pop I was thrust into a giant domed structure the size of a sports stadium.
As ayahuasca ceremonies go, it is one of the stranger ones, a night of ferocity, shrieking, madness, gallons of water splashed all over the place, exhausted helpers having performed yeoman’s duty, the rest of us relieved when Yuri’s screams have subsided and the storm around him has died down.
Seeking supernormal inspiration, I determined to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens and do some perceptual fieldwork there. This glorious plant sanctuary provides a wonderful opportunity to confront some of nature’s more exotic creations housed safely within Kew’s splendid Victorian greenhouses.
