Just Add Fungi

Erin Shaw

In a study of the environmental fate of uranium, a research team in Scotland has discovered that common fungi can lock the radioactive material “into a chemical form inaccessible to biological organisms, and unlikely to dissolve into surface waters.” Uranium, a highly dense element used to add weight to missiles, is impossible to physically remove from battlefields. Fungi, however, coat depleted uranium in a yellow mineral that makes it chemically stable and could prevent it from moving up the food chain. Although the safety is not guaranteed, fungi’s ability to trap uranium with just moisture and nutrients could lead to a practical way to decontaminate war-torn lands.

Paul Stamets

This seems very promising. Paul Stamets has done similar research cleaning up petroleum waste. If this article interests you then check out his talk "6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save The World" at TED.

I think fungi have a lot of unrealized potential for applications like this.

Good to know!

Not only are mushrooms a great way to open consciousness, but they can help save everyone physically too! I only wish that people would give plants the respect they deserved all the time.

Amazing! Simply Incredible!

Amazing! Simply Incredible! I love how Fungi has so much potential even beyond that of our own expectations.

Which makes it's position in society today all the more puzzling. How is it that we don't recognize it's abilities as a tool? Are we in such a state of denial? Are we that ignorant? I only wish to reach peace with the world around me through the use of harmless fungi and yet I would be jailed for doing so. And still, drugs bent on self-destruction and mental numbness like alcohol and prozak are socially accepted and even encouraged. We live in a strange world where insanity is the norm.

Great article, great links

This research has some precedents that have been ignored for a long time. It has even been proposed that beyond mere capture or sequestering, that biological enzymes seem to be capable of changing all the energy levels of different molecules and changing one element into another to account for mysterious gains of elements missing from the starting material.

See: http://www.gdr.org/transmutationmicroorgan.htm

The above site contains the thoughts of L.B. Kervran about biological transmutations. He notes:

"A bacterium which can support ten million roentgens for eight hour has been discovered! The mortal dose for man is 500 roentgens. This bacterium, of the Pseudomonas type, was discovered in 1958 in Los Alamos U.S.A., in the water of a nuclear reactor. It liked the medium so much that it reproduced every twenty minutes."

Hardy stuff. Fungi and yeasts show amazing versitility and can grow to sizes equaling many tons under ground:

And there is evidence that supports the idea that yeast and fungi are the commonest form of carcinogen and mediate the debilitation of patients after using anti-biotics to treat a simple infection, but who then die from "wasting away", or cachexia:

There is no doubt that enzymes are the most powerful organic-biological molecules. An enzyme can reduce substances to atoms and molecules. Dynamite in comparison is only capable of producing shrapnel or comparitively huge chunks of substance.

And all enzymes emanate from the DNA that is in every cell. We have yet to determine a new class of enzymes that evidently can change atoms from one species or congeners into another.

There is nothing more prolific than fungi and yeasts save perhaps the bacteriophage.

The government is really interested in this phenomena:

http://www.jgi.doe.gov/News/news_5_4_08.html

That the human race or any other form of life can continue to live against this onslaught tells us that there is a modality of war that is all about the repetoire of the enzymes and enzyme inhibitors that DNA produces. Recall that the DNA produces nothing but proteins (which include enzymes) with only one exception: RNA, probably the most ancient form of genetic material AND the only non-protein enzyme we know of.

There is hope! We have produced a concentration of radioactity that represents the very extreme of artificial manipulation of the environment. And resort to life-forms to solve this problem which revolves around energy-needs, will eventually lead us by necessity to recognise the most potent thing there is: consciousness, the source of all biology.
