Stephen Hershey

Shine Global and THINKFilm’s WAR/DANCE follows three Acholi children from the Patongo refugee camp of Northern Uganda as they compete with thousands of schools in the National Music Competition. The children, currently under the oppression of rebel guerillas, use music to help extend their vision beyond the suffering of their people. WAR/DANCE was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2008 Academy Awards.

Moving and Powerful Trailer

At first, I was a bit skeptical of this being your typical feel-good, get-empowered through music/dance film. I feel I've seen a few of those around. But judging from the trailer, this seems to be quite a beautiful, moving, powerful, and sorrowful look at some kids living through an extreme situation and somehow bringing joy into the world. Well worth the 5 minutes it takes to check out the trailer.
