First quarter moon today! Translation: a kind of burst or breakthrough.
For those who don’t know, the Moon cycle has 4 distinct phases that we generally keep track of each lunar month. The new moon, which is the time of month where you can’t see the moon at all (the beginning of the cycle), the first quarter moon (where the waxing/growing moon is half lit and half dark), the full Moon (duh), andthe last quarter moon (now the moon is waning and the moon is half lit and half dark again, but about to be swallowed by the darkness).
Each stage of the cycle represents a symbolic phase of “development” in a kind of monthly story. Some people see the movement as a kind of energy flux, like high and low tides, others see it like the life cycle of a flower or plant, and others see it as a kind of rise to consciousness and descent back into unconsciousness.
However we choose to think about it, the first quarter moon time is a time where many ideas that have been lying dormant in the psyche start to come to life and show themselves more literally, more manifestly, in the world. Through our relationships, families, homes, jobs, kids, events, etc. What we have been dwelling upon, working over, whatever the meditation of our hearts, it’s time to see some of the green shoots of the plant poking through the soil. So in the next twenty four hours keep your eyes and ears open to see the manifestations of our heart’s desires.
Sometimes it can feel karmic. Like we’re reaping what we’ve sown, or like some big enforcer in the sky is smacking us on the wrists. Other times its about gentle reminders, aha moments, or the first results of careful labor we’ve been doing.
With the first quarter Moon in Virgo and the Sun in Gemini, both ruled by Mercury in Cancer, the themes of communication, family, childhood, and the past are obvious candidates for first quarter drama. For example, today I am flying out to Colorado to see a childhood friend I haven’t seen for many years. No doubt we will be revisiting the past and doing lots of catching up over the next few days, starting tonight!
Simultaneously we might get some delays (knock on wood), setbacks, revisions, and changes of heart or mind. We might find ourselves suddenly having to change plans or rework something. This could be very frustrating, so patience and acceptance are important right now. Remember that when something doesn’t turn out as we hoped it would, there are usually a few good reasons, and if we see it that way, and get curious to find out “why,” then the disappointment can turn into a kind of intrigue or detective puzzle.
The soul loves hermeneutics. Which is why hermes/mercury is the guide of the soul.
We love interpreting things that appear to be mundane “facts.” And yet as soon as we interpret something in a precise way, it becomes the new raw material for further analysis and interpretation. This is called the hermeneutic circle, and like the soul it is eternal. We are here to live and interpret the fiction of the facts we choose to focus on. This interpretation becomes the new facts and around we go again. The soul feels stuck when this continuous poetry of soul making and soul interpreting isn’t happening.
So even if something doesn’t turn out as we hoped for or thought it would right now, even if there are sudden or unexpected changes, this is great new material for our soul to interpret……..so much depends upon our ability to interrupt our reactionary frustration and get curious about things instead.
