Nanosphere is the alias of Sam Squirrell, a psychedelic producer currently based in Bristol, UK. He incorporates soundscapes of psybreaks and psy-tech-funk, while incorporating them through uptempo and midtempo bpm’s, and placing technical precision, melodic grooves, fresh amalgamations, and elevating funky intentions. A classically trained musician, he started producing music at the age of 14, as he quickly emerged into a guiding full-focus path via music production, especially after studying Sound Engineering at University level, before going beyond and teaching it for 3 years. He was initially influenced by psychedelic music through the gift of his first CD, “The Flying Teapot” by Gong, given to him by his brother. Shortly after, he found a tape of U.F.Orb lying around, a tape that would change his musical direction completely: he fell in love with psychedelic dance music.
He immersed himself further into the dream by spending time at PsyTrance festivals mainly going to listen to chillout artists such as Ott. He gradually started to warm up to PsyTrance, but it wasn’t until he discovered artists such as Far Too Loud, Hedflux, and the world of PsyBreaks, that it really triggered a decision on which type of music he wanted to produce: “I loved the way it combined the funky and groovy rhythms of Breakbeat, with the atmosphere and high technical production values of PsyTrance.” As of recently, he’s begun to incorporate more consistent spiritual rituals such as yoga, climbing, and hiking as it helps to balance himself and focus his excessive energy. Other habitual practices consist of Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and listening to Alan Watts lectures, and reading Sci-Fi. Sam Squirrell has begun to shift his distinctive high-energy sound down a notch into 110bpm atmosphere, and his fresh new style is revealed in Luminus Music, under Twisted Clarity EP.
Nanosphere released Twisted Clarity on Luminus Music, an unimaginable twist in sound design. A slower 110bpm direction is present compared to his previous releases; new insights have expanded his creativity. It’s a psychedelic exploration into glowing squelches through deep mid-tempo psy breaks, funky fresh beats, dub/groovy feels, and glitch-hop fusions. An ancient tapestry weaved into deep artistry of knowledge is revealed through interdimensional space through genius composition. Twisted Clarity is an amalgamation of its own, as it features vocalized samples consisting of prolific dream messages, soothing yet sporadic chants, psybreaks, Eastern melodies, and mind-boggling rhythms, all of which make for profound uniqueness. Sam is not afraid to experiment with different visions and lower bpms, as this release has proven to be a masterpiece. The mastering was done by Colin Bennun at Stooodio Mastering, and artwork by mystic artist, Hakan Hisim.
Twisted Clarity features four psychedelic tracks all made possible through breathtaking twists: “Twisted Clarity,” “Intrinsic,” “Sleeping Gate,” and “Synergy.” “Twisted Clarity” is a distinctive psybreak mission into the known. Reverberating effects amplify the tangled-spiraling theme, giving sounds colloquial meaning of their own. Intricate escapes, scintillating crescendos, and precise alien-esque breaks transport the listener into a new way of thought. “Intrinsic” is initially triggered through an eerie atmosphere composed of psychedelic squelches and glitch growls, as you hear vocalizations, “Did you ever dream about someone before you saw them in life? Sort of like you made them up, but you didn’t. It really happened, things like that, strange, amazing things. I swear they happen all the time.” A groovy theme flows smoothly as surrounding space makes for uplifting melodies, ethereal escapes, and insights of dream breakthroughs. “Sleeping Gate” is a new fluorescent chapter into the mix as it reveals bending bass, and a technical introduction through innovation. A juicy tale of intertwining melodies and rhythmic formation unfolds into galactic worlds. “Synergy” is a glow in the dark groove, it’s a mid-tempo journey consisting of squelchy rhythms, hard hitting bass, and chopped vocalized intentions – a remarkable sound designer.
