In honor of this epic upcoming event, we caught up with Sven Mattes, Director of Anthropos to discuss the festival’s offerings.
We really love your music programming; usually chillout takes a back seat and with Anthropos it seems front and center. Can you tell us about the inspiration of your roster?
We are in love with ambient and downtempo music. The chillout genres have such a great dynamic and can surprise you in so many ways that they really deserves the spotlight! We celebrate diverse music expression and the positive and uplifting messages that come with chillout. We spawned this festival through a love of downtempo music as we found ourselves spending the whole time lying in chillout areas of different international festivals and this is where we find our favourite things within a chilled out community. We wanted to bring this feeling home and there is a lot of space for expanding onto this vibe.
One can find inner peace or be taken to different dimensions, skanking and wobbling away to the different basslines. We love immersive sound journeys, so energetic with sound and healing or harmonising with the listener. And we don’t just programme chillout, we host Electronic Dance Music such as Psytrance, Bass, Glitch as well as Live, Acoustic, World, Faerie Folk and Local Bands. There’s something for everyone at Anthropos Festival!
We realize that Anthropos is Greek for human, but what does it mean in relation to the festival?
It’s about celebrating all of humanity! The dynamic journey we have been on as a collective, our past, present and future. What makes us human, the expression, introspection and ability to create.
People are the most important element at festivals beyond the music, the arts, the setting, the décor–all of that doesn’t mean anything without the community and people that a festival brings. So a title like Anthropos is honouring the most base thing at the centre of festivals, bringing people together! It is a celebration of all of humanity throughout all time: past, present and future. We are here to explore the unique nature of our consciousness – our drive to create beauty through the arts and music, combined with our innate ability to gain wisdom through introspection. Together let us re-remember how to be human!
Please provide more info and details about the retreat portion of the week.
The retreat is a melting point of great teachers and masters of their craft offering workshops and lectures and the space to delve deep within, awakening your creative and reflective forces. A lot of the artists, musicians and practitioners attending the festival will collect here to attune the feeling of Anthropos! It is a big meeting pot of art: the visual expression, music: auditory discovery and meditation: finding balance within. Discovering the cross pollination of these subjects with you being at the centre is what the retreat is all about. Oh and of course spa and sauna!
Please tell us more about the grounds/the environment.
Our festival home is situated in beautiful North Hertfordshire. We’re so happy to have found something out in nature which is still very accessible. The Anthropos woodland was planted in 1980 and has been now transformed into a magnificent festival site. The big field is overlooking a stunning view towards the sunset which falls perfectly around the big ceremonial fire.
We’re only using natural products as well as composting toilets to keep the ground and water happy and chemical free!
One of our priorities for looking for a location was having a woodland and we were lucky to find a perfect space where people can enjoy music and relax in a forest. Finding such a beautiful location where you can become part of the festival in a natural setting surrounded by trees will give you a real sense of coming back to the roots. We felt the magic instantly.
What was the main inspiration of the festival? How did the founders come up with the seed to create such a wonderful event?
We love celebration and humanity, put it together and you have Anthropos Festival! Most of our crew have been involved with events and festivals for years and are now collectively creating something unique! Having a big range of different people of all walks of life, old and young working with a consensus democratic system to shape Anthropos has been a fantastic journey. We love to create something that triggers the emotional nature in us as humans and wanted to share an original space coming together to have new experiences and that is at the heart of why we came up with Anthropos Festival!
As a crew we aim to have a positive impact on not only your personal experience as a festival participant but also on the broader culture beyond that. Environmental awareness is at the heart of our festival. We want to explore new ideas and think about where we might be able to move to as a humans, together. Highlighting the very best of the human experience, we believe that everyone’s voice is important and brings something unique to this reality that we shape together.
Please share your inspiration for: “For every festival ticket sold we will plant a tree in your name!”
We LOVE trees! And we care for the environment. We believe running a festival can be done with a positive impact on the environment. With our green initiatives we ensure that we reduce and offset carbon emissions. So we can have a blast and be good to our mother earth at the same time! So with every festival ticket purchase in conjunction with Arjuna and the forestry commission we plant a tree on a farm in Cambridgeshire. You can even visit your tree and or help us plant the tree after the festival!
If you’d like to read more about our green initiatives and in depth explanations–why we are a 100% vegan festival, for example–check out our Environmental Awareness page here: http://anthroposfestival.org/green.html
What sets the festival apart and why would it be a great idea to travel to Anthropos Festival from another city?
We’re not just a music festival, there are so many other focuses that we are highlighting which often fall behind when you want to catch your favourite act. So we’ve programmed two days without music to enable you to really explore the different workshops and lectures as well as getting creative in the art spaces with materials provided.
A lot of people enjoy festivals in a vacuum. They attend the event and then leave back to their lives like a bubble of experience but we want to have the joy and positive effects of a festival experience that is integrated into people’s lives not being separate. So this is done by incorporating a period of reflection and personal development to take back to their lives and not just a weekend of catharsis.
We encourage lift sharing and are offsetting the carbon emissions with donations to Energy Revolution, a charity directly investing in renewable energy. You can join the Facebook group here to arrange travel with others, so if you come from another city and are coming via car you don’t have to feel too bad about having a great time and making some new friends while you’re at it!
