Coal Country
“Mountaintop removal is the most devastating peacetime activity in
human history — in fact, if the destruction to our nation’s natural and
cultural heritage were being perpetrated by a foreign power, it would
be considered an act of war — because in a very real sense, it is — it
is a war against the Earth. Every week, mountaintop removal
coal-mining detonates more explosive force on the land and the
communities of Appalachia than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, to
extract the coal that is warming the planet and poisoning the water,
air and land. We should all be dedicated to ending this unsustainable,
and ultimately suicidal practice. And to promoting renewable energy
alternatives and the green jobs they will create.” Woody Harrelson (85

Dinner at Ikea, Red Hook
This Friday join us for dinner at Ikea, Red Hook — there are no
scheduled events this time to stop us so we are on. We will be taking
the 6:40 boat from the Wall Street pier on the East Side. The last
outgoing boat is 7:20. Dinner goes from 7pm to 8:30 in the dining hall.
We’ll actually be eating dinner. At 8:30 we will begin our exodus
around the casino styled IKEA through the pillow room, kitchens,
bedrooms and beyond. No thievery or playing with IKEA employees…
they’ll be too busy asking us to exit. Following our exit we’ll travel
in style on Ikea’s own buses to Smith Street to our traditional drink
at the Brooklyn Social Club. Instead of a Santa Cap please bring a can
of TAB soda or TAB derivative soda such as Energy. If you can’t find
that please bring a non alcoholic soda that is as bizarre as you are.
Please place your TAB can on your table so that we can recognize you.
We’ll all sit together. If you choose to you can meet us in Red Hook
on Beard street. By car or boat directly or by train to Carroll Street
(F) and then busing over. The ferry is $5, refundable in Ikea credit.

Falu – classically trained Indian vocalist
Falu is a classically trained Indian vocalist whose diverse musical
repertoire captures both her traditional roots as well as her unique
ability in combining Hindi music with an inventive rock sound. Her
live performances from both genres have been featured numerous times at
Carnegie Hall (Zankel), nationally on FOX TV and internationally on
National Geographic TV, while her voice has been captured in multiple
films including Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut A Place in Time.
One of Falu’s most stunning performances was at the Time 100 Gala where
she was invited to perform a duet with Slumdog Millionaire composer
A.R. Rahman in front of the one hundred selection of Time Magazine’s
most influential people in the world of 2008, which not surprisingly
included First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. Most recently,
in November of 2009 Falu performed at the White House, where she was
invited to sing alongside A.R. Rahman again at President Obama’s first
State Dinner in honor of the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Don’t miss this opportunity to catch Falu in the intimate setting of
NYC’s Joe’s Pub.Falu’s last performance at Joe’s Pub sold out quickly,
therefore advanced tickets are recommended. Happy New Year to all our
Facebook friends. We’re excited to start 2010 with a performance at
NYC’s Joe’s Pub! Help us bring in the New Year at this amazing East
Village venue. Join Falu and her band as they perform songs that blend
classical Indian melodies with contemporary western sounds (check out
the video below to get a taste). Falu will also be performing songs
from her upcoming album. Preceding Falu, the very talented Sunny Jain
will perform with Red Baraat. Falu is a classically-trained Indian
singer best known for blending ancient classical Indian melodies with
contemporary Western sounds. She has worked with and performed
alongside a wide array of talented artists including A.R. Rahman
(Slumdog Millionaire), Yo-Yo Ma (in The Silk Road Project), Philip
Glass and Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic), and most recently
performed at President Obama’s first State Dinner honoring Indian Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh.

Reiki Q&A
Hosted by Alokananda Luke. Reiki is surfacing in the west with much
vigor. It is being used more and more in hospitals, cancer centers,
nursing homes, wellness centers, along with massage etc etc. Even if
your not looking to heal others, the attunement process itself is
tremendously healing for the nervous system. It can release and “make
room” for a higher vibration, of choice, freedom and health. Very
often Reiki is heavily associated with a lot of “new age” spirituality
which can turn people off. Very often you get Reiki “masters” who have
gone through a Rushed attunement process in 3 weeks and are deemed
masters. Come meet a grounded, self realized teacher of 12 years,
Level 12 Reiki Master and Bio-Energetics Therapist. Alok says that
Edmund is an amazing teacher, humorous and truly down to earth. He will
be giving a talk about Reiki, with an open forum for question and
answer. Come see what its about. The talk is by donation, Give
whatever you can. From 1:30-2:30 The talk will be followed by Reiki
level 2 attunement. From 3:00 – 6:30 there will be a Reiki lvl One
Attunement available to those interested at the end of January~ -The
cost of the attunement is 108$ and includes a vegetarian lunch and
materials. For questions and registration please contact Alok at

Regenerative farming in the Hudson Valley, and the future of the NYC “Food-shed”
Kevin Skvorak and Sarah Williford of Regeneration CSA; Four years of
Regenerative farming in the Hudson Valley. Beginning with a detailed
presentation of our own Permaculture-based practices, we’ll share the
connections we see between soil & ecological health, the health of
our CSA members, climate change, long term food-security in the Hudson
Valley, and a whole lot more. We hope that other food organizers will
come and help us sort out some answers to the following questions: What
are the radical/transformative organizing opportunities and challenges
within the local food movement? What is the future of sustainable
local food for NYC eaters? And what can NYC people do to shape that
future? Bios: Kevin and Sarah farm, live, work, teach, and learn
together at Regeneration CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm in
High Falls NY. There they feed the chickens, grow veggies, teach
Permaculture, do a few other chores each day, and do their best to be
part of the solution. They are also involved in the Hudson Valley
Community and Agricultural Land Trust, a new non-profit working on
farmland/foodshed protection and new farmer land access in the HV.

Music Video Mashup at 3rd Ward
Moviehouse Presents Live Video Music. Moviehouse is back with their
annual music video mash-up! This Friday they’ll turn our screening room
into a stage for a night of bad-ass beats, screaming guitars, and the
city’s best video producers. Videos, bands, live performances,
happiness. Featuring: 100 Yards of Home Runs by The Contrails. The
Contrails provide a relief to the attention span with sounds worth
meditating over. The Brooklyn based Contrails have a rock ‘n’ roll
weapon of crescendo power that leaves audiences pleasantly bewildered.
Some other bands the members have performed in: Purse Snatchers,
Boadrum, Viva Nada, and Poodles and Ice Cream. Lada Killa by Akwarian
Sea Rebel. Akwarian Sea Rebel is a one-woman powerhouse. She played
guitar and wrote for bands for 14 years opening up for The Roots,
Diplo, Gnarls Barkley, The Cool Kids and more. If you had to push
Akwarian Sea Rebel’s sound into a few genres they would be
world/tropical/hip-hop/surf-dubby/earthy beats with tangible lyrics.
Her vocals have been compared to Amy Winehouse, Adelle, Missy Elliot
and M.I.A.

Chaos Brigade
The concept is none other than having a replica of the Carnival of
Venice, a beautiful parade that dates back as far as the 1200’s. In
this parade, the participants are fully disguised, the costumes are up
to the costume wearer, the only requirement is the Mask, so typical of
this event. What we would to is show up in full venetian regalia in St.
Marks (venice carnival begins in St. Mark’s Square) and spread out
through the downtown area around Little Italy, then the entire ‘parade’
itself can reconvene three evenings for the weekend and stop at things,
like rocky horror, personality crisis, performances, etc. The dates
would be around the same as the carnival in Venice and it would last
through out the weekend. This Antician Event is brought to you by

Body and Soul: Art as a Spiritual Practice
For all levels of artistic ability. As artists, we are sparks of
universal creativity. In alignment with the Cosmic Order, in a natural
flow from our own uniqueness, vision takes the form of artistic
expression. We connect with and manifest images of our essence in order
to feel healthy and whole. Whether we create for “right livelihood” or
for our own personal enjoyment, art practiced in this spirit can be a
healing force. This 3-day weekend workshop, primarily focused on
drawing, will include vision practices that facilitate glimpses of
divine imagination, chakra drawing with a yogic model, inner
self-portraiture, studies in sacred geometry, and slide show talks on
the history of visionary and spiritual art. Everyone will take home
artistic touchstones of the harmonic integration of body and soul.
Artists who prefer another medium may come prepared to work in it..

Hoop School – Hooping Instruction/Hoop Sculpt/Hoop Story
An exciting hoopdance series that will push you to learn WAY faster
than you could figure it out on your own. Each series will feature a
guest instructor for a day to pass on his or her best gems of
“hoopocity”. Why struggle through months and years of frustrating trial
and error trying to decipher all the cool tricks by yourself like I
did (and many expert hoopers did) when you can take advantage of our
collective knowledge and experience, served to you on a silver
platter? Hoosculpt is a fun-conventional fitness class for beginners.
No experience necessary. Join us for a fun, funky, fabulous adventure
into fitness that will challenge your idea of “working out”. Using only
adult hoops and your own body weight, we’ll boost our stamina, core
strength, coordination, and flexibility. Hoop moves like jump-throughs
and revolving doors, partner up for circuit training, mix it up with
games: rainbow ring, hoop limbo, hoop chaser, hoopstacle course. And
maybe you’ll learn a few fancy tricks in the process. This is not a
dance class; you will Sweat. Hoopstory: An affordable, weekly hoop jam
for those who prefer something loose and casual. Write your own story!
No rules, no teachers, no formal instruction. Learn from your friends
and peers. We provide great tunes and a nice space: centrally located,
climate controlled, sprung floors, full length mirrors & bathrooms.
You just show up with $6 and a hoop and play.
