Feminist multimedia artist, singer, and writer Jean Smith – best known as the singer in the iconic underground rock band Mecca Normal – quit her part time job to sell her paintings online. As she shares her latest paintings on Facebook, she allows her fans to follow the rapid evolution of her work. This is the second in a series of interviews with artists working through Facebook to reach audiences.
ESC is a nonprofit launched in late 2013 and dedicated to “assuring the sustainability and safe use of traditional plants,” of which ayahuasca has been the clear priority thus far. All in all, ESC seems well-intentioned. So what are 17 experts (now 62) from Canada, Brazil, the UK, Australia, Costa Rica, Mexico, the US, and Colombia up in arms about?
"prophecies" cited in writings on 2012 are simply not true. Similarly, one finds all
manner of statements allegedly supported by NASA, when in fact NASA has spent a good deal of
effort refuting such things.
Equally, there is dishonesty amongst the writings that seek solely
to debunk. What's missing is a balance
between visionary and critical thinking.
The personal and
planetary mirror each other. The connection is more than mere analogy: the kind
of work that we force
ourselves to do is precisely the kind of work that despoils the planet. We don't really want to do it to our bodies; we
don't really want to do it to the world.
In my 20's I was part of a second
wave of Buddhist transmission to America. I knew two generations of artists with Buddhist inclinations, and in interviews with them, all roads led back to the
Japanese scholar, Dr. D.T. Suzuki. Who was this
unassuming person who had helped change the direction
of American culture?
It has been 40 years since the fabled Apollo moon landings. For as many years, there's also been a controversy between those who accept the landings as legitimate, and those who believe they were faked. I propose a third position: Humans did go to the moon, but what we saw on TV was completely faked – by none other than the great filmmaker Stanley Kubrick.
If cool hunters are appropriating subcultures, than we need to reaffirm ourselves as ethical communities. If advertisers want to sell us products regardless of their social and environmental impact, perhaps we should exile them to a place where they will no longer hurt anyone.
