Stranded : September 5 : Burn Night : NYC A Galapagos Islands Warehouse Adventure
On September 5, join Winkel & Balktick on another epic voyage to a pristine equatorial archipelago. For on this night, armed with a slew of beakers, bunsen burners, polymerase chain reactions, artists, tinkerers and charlatans, we will climb aboard the HMS Beagle. Our destination? The Galapagos Islands. Naturally, you’ve been selected to join us. Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Origin of Species with lava lizards, finches, enormous tortoises, beach-combing penguins, eels, sharks, and lest we forget, the dark-rumped petrel.On Saturday, September 5, Winkel & Balktick will once again work their warehouse-sized magic to present an unforgettable evening of DJs, live music, performance, art installations, activities, costumes and an island full of new friends. Don’t miss worshiping at the Temple of the Gamelatron, a chance to kick back and relax at the El Tortuga Spa & Resort, suspenseful aerial performances, and of course, dancing till sunrise. Nearly one year ago, Winkel & Balktick led a motley crew on a journey to a magical desert island, full of merrymaking and enchantment. Sunset to sunrise, they were heartily entertained by the natives’ artistic gifts, dancing and sumptuous desserts. It was a night to remember, and the tales of what transpired there are spoken of in hushed tones of awe and legend. For the past year, Winkel & Balktick have been adrift, searching for their next oasis. Near and far, they brazenly made their way through straits and capes, stopping at every island along their wayward path. Month after month, they met with tribal elders, courtiers, craftsman and jesters. They surveyed countless vistas and coves, sampled local delicacies and participated in exotic mating rituals. Finally… just a few short weeks ago, nearly one year after their initial voyage, their prayers were answered. Just below Red Hook in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, they ventured deep inside the confines of the Irving T. Bush Terminal, once the largest industrial park in the world. They discovered a sprawling complex of piers, docks, warehouses, factories and railroads. There, they stumbled upon the HMS Beagle. Within the Beagle’s vast hull lurk two 13,000 square foot cabins overlooking the East River. This will be the Beagle’s first journey of this nature, but it will certainly not be its last. On September 5, the Beagle will set out on its maiden voyage, along with a crew of beakers, bunsen burners, polymerase chain reactions, artists, tinkerers and charlatans. Leave Brooklyn far behind, and venture to our destination… The Galapagos Islands! Naturally, you’ve been selected to join us! Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Origin of Species with lava lizards, finches, enormous tortoises, beach-combing penguins, eels, sharks, the blue-footed booby, and lest we forget, the dark-rumped petrel. Featuring: House, techno, disco and dubstep mating experiments with DJs…BeenJammin’, Arrow Chrome, D_Juice, Reza, Zemi17. Witness live trip-hop, hip-hop and drum n bass from…ZXL, Miss Angelina, Sistine Criminals, Psyche Corporation, Tajna Tanovic. installations, performances, activities, games and other
revolutionary discoveries as well.

No Impact Man
In November 2006, author and self-proclaimed environmentalist Colin Beavan left his liberal complacency behind, vowing to make as little environmental impact as possible for a year. The No Impact Project meant no automated transportation, no electricity, no non-local food, and no material consumption. To Colin, no problem, until his wife Michelle and two year-old daughter are dragged into the fray. Filmmakers Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein provide a front-row seat into the familial strains and strengthened bonds that result from a family’s struggle with this radical lifestyle change. This screening launches the film’s theatrical release by Oscilloscope Pictures. Followed by a Q&A and reception with Colin Beavan, Michelle Conlin and filmmakers Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein. Organic wine will be served. Colin will be signing his new book No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process.

The Mission of Art with Alex and Allyson Grey
The mission of the artist is to make the soul perceptible. In this workshop, we will explore the role of an artist’s intention and conscience, and how we of the postmodern age can draw on the creative process as a spiritual path. As sacred artists, we align our will with the creative force of the cosmos, becoming microcosms of universal creativity. Through the divine imagination, artists offer to the world the pain and beauty of their soul as a gift to open the eyes and heal the collective. Learn how art can be a form of worship and service, and how an artist can follow the inner calling to creatively serve our physically and spiritually depleted world. This workshop will include a mixture of visioning, art making, slide talks, meditation, movement, and discussion based on required and recommended reading prior to the class, including the books The Mission of Art, and Art psalms. Course fee – $225 . Includes lunch and dinner. Limited overnight on-site accommodation available. Call for more information about housing and travel.

Broken Hearts, Healing Waters – A day of filling what is empty and emptying what is full
Brought to you by the School of Psychospiritual Studies. What blocks you from truly feeling the love that surrounds you in your life? This will be the focus of our group work which we continue in September. It is perhaps the ultimate quest of a lifetime, as yet it is the reason we go on living. The search for love, for ourselves, with our loved ones, is perhaps a major purpose of our lives. Even contributing to the healing of the world is a part of this larger idea. Yet we all have within ourselves the shadow side, a broken heart in certain places, the subconscious mind, which defends and protects against love, which misunderstands it in a certain way, which sees love as dangerous, or which looks for it in ways that leave us feeling empty or alone. We have places within that have never learned to take in and digest the love that is given to us. We will focus this day on learning to take in and digest the love that is offered in a way that is not toxic or barren; how to live joyfully including the broken places; how to be in meaningful connection with others without hurting ourselves in the process. A specific Kabbalistic healing will be taught as well as shadow work accessing the unconscious mind. Intro lecture and weekend retreat: November 11 7pm Intro Lecture Englewood NJ. November 20-22 Weekend Retreat Englewood, NJ. This work combines the Kabbalistic teachings in the lineage of Issac Luria; the practices, poetry and music of the Sufi Mystics; and skills for working with the unconscious patterns which cause suffering in relationships with others and ourselves. Lead by Dr. Shems Prinzivalli, this is an ongoing organic community of seekers, psychologists, businesspeople, physicians, teachers, healers and those of any walk of life who wish feel more fulfilled in their work life, or to improve the quality of their inner emotional world, their relationships and their spiritual well-being while remaining grounded in daily life. We are not “new age” in the usual sense, but we do combine spiritual teachings and practice with personal self-inquiry and change. We have a balance of male and female participation and we come together as a movable feast in community with like-minded others. We welcome all new people of any background, regardless of previous training in Kabbalah or Sufism. An inquiring and willing heart and mind are all that are necessary. Some words about the inner work are below as well as a brief article about our particular philosophy on Kabbalah. More info is available on our website. (www.energeticpsychology.com) About the Inner Work: We all have places within that we wish to avoid, hide, remove or otherwise keep far away from our lives. We all have places where we are broken. So too, our families and our world have broken places. These classes and community continue the exploration of how to find a place for those pieces and still have joy and well-being in our lives. We do not have to wait to be totally “healed” to begin having a good life. When we find a way to live with the parts we so despise, that embarrass us or make us feel less than others, a huge amount of energy becomes available to use in other more creative ways. In these classes and community, we use tools for accessing, understanding and giving space to the parts of ourselves we judge so harshly, primarily so that we can have more abundant, life-giving relationships and a fulfilling life. Even the cosmic physicists have discovered that the majority of the universe is made up of a substance called Dark Matter or Dark Light. This Dark Matter is the terrain we explore together at the level of the inner psyche and on the Kabbalistic map of the Tree of Life. This is an invitation to join us as we adventure into the underside of our minds and spirits to find joy and delight anyhow. The only requirement is that you be with us for the full day or on weekends for the entire time of both Sat and Sunday during the day. Fee: $88/day. CEU’s available. We are also listed on http://www.meetup.com

=====November 6 and 7=====
I want to tell you about an amazing fundraiser and event coming up Fri-Sat, November 6 & 7 by the ID Project
Sit Down, Rise Up is going to be a 24 meditation marathon organized by the ID Project. We will be sitting, as a group, for an entire 24 hours in the windows of ABC Home on 18th and Broadway! Two of us –Rafi Santo, IDP’s Integral Activism Director, and myself–will be sitting all 24 hours! We are asking people interested in this fundraiser to sign up to meditate for one 4-hour shift within the 24 hours (walking meditation and bathroom breaks included – no worries).
Sometimes I wish everyone in the IDP community could see all the emails, phone calls, facebook messages, tweets, and every other form of feedback we receive, telling us how unique and visionary they find our blend of Buddhism, Meditation, Activism, and Arts. Even if they’ve only connected to us online from Kansas or Australia (you’d be surprised how many have), via the blog or podcast, it is clear that the growing model and manifestation of our community is an inspiration for many people. But it seems that if we are going to develop further as a community, we need our own dedicated space to grow into and grow outward from, so that our growing Buddhism and meditation studies, our two great Activism projects, our Arts groups and Salons, and all our online media projects will have a true home.
To put it simply, our community is going to need its own community center!
This November’s fundraiser and meditation event is going to be the biggest event the IDP has ever put together, by far. The overall goal is raise enough funds secure a new home for the IDP! By Fall 2010 we hope to have our own space for all the great meditation, activism, arts, and media we produce. We even envision possibly having our own storefront. Our leadership estimates that to meet this goal, we need to raise at least $100,000 over the next year on top of our normal “shoestring-budget” operating expenses.
But as with most things interdependent… it all starts with you. Over 50 people have alread signed up to sit in this amazing practice environment. We are hoping to get at least 100 in all. Sitters will then get donations from friends and family willing to sponsor their meditation marathon.
Since the window display at ABC Homes has limited space, we are reaching out to those closest to the IDP first… you. The hope is that dedicated members will be willing to set a highly attainable personal goal of $480. That means getting 20 people to donate $24 each (one dollar for each hour of the marathon).
I think this will be an amazing experience most meditators and certainly any IDP member will not want to miss. So… are you interested? There are also other ways to be involved in the event -please feel free to directly share your personal concerns.
Details and many resources for how to get sponsors will be coming right after Labor Day, when the Fall season gets rolling. Right now we are just trying to get a list of committed sitters together before the summer comes to an end. Please RSVP to this email.
I’m sure you have a lot of questions. Feel free to ask away. Also, talk to Patrick, Andrew Bowler or Jerry Kolber – they are working on the event as well and will happily answer any questions you have.
Best Wishes,
Ethan Nichtern

=====September 25 – 27=====
Announcing a new Meetup for Psychedelic and Entheogenic Society of New York City
What: Horizons Perspectives on Psychedelics – September 25-27th in NYC
When: September 25, 2009 8:00 PM…and ALL WEEKEND LONG
Where:
Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square S
New York, NY 10012
Horizons is an annual forum for learning about psychedelics, hosted by Judson Memorial Church in New York City. Its goal is to open a fresh dialogue about psychedelics and rethink their role in medicine, culture, history, spirituality and art.
Psychedelics are a unique class of psychoactive drugs that have been used by humans for thousands of years. In the 1950s and early 1960s, academic research with psychedelics yielded important discoveries in psychology and neuroscience. Just a few years later, they entered popular culture across North America, Europe and the world.
Questions about their safety, medical value, history and implications in politics and culture were unfortunately answered with numerous myths spread by both their users and the media. The millennial rave fever brought a similar wave of popularity and hysteria.
Recently, a renaissance in psychedelic research and dialogue has taken shape. Horizons brings together the brightest minds and boldest voices of this movement to share their insights and dreams for the future.

She also oversees a nationwide Web-based recruitment effort for a similar trial currently underway at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Inspired by seeing first-hand how psychedelic therapy can relieve suffering, she began a Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto. In 2008, she was a speaker on the ÒRising ResearchersÓ panel at the World Psychedelic Forum in Basel, Switzerland. This summer will mark her sixth year as a Sanctuary volunteer at Burning Man.

Bob Jesse is organizer of the Council on Spiritual Practices (csp.org/about), which aims to shift modernity’s awareness and practices with respect to primary religious experience (csp.org/PRE). CSP also encourages people to imagine and develop social contexts to contain such experiences and help them yield lasting benefit.
Through CSP, Bob and his colleagues initiated a study, conducted at Johns Hopkins and reported around the world, of the psychospiritual effects of psilocybin in healthy volunteers (csp.org/psilocybin). This expands the emphasis in hallucinogen research beyond the medical treatment of ill people to include the betterment of well people, contributing to a science of pro-social development.
On his home front, Bob is co-founder of a spiritual community formed around ecstatic dance. His formal training is in engineering.
