Approximately 7,500 years ago agricultural communities began to develop along the Danube basin. Within two centuries they had spread from Belgium to Ukraine. Unlike their hunter-gatherer ancestors, they planted crops, using seeds from the Near East. Amid all those eastern plants was one that came from the southwest -- Papaver somniferum.
