The moon is void of course this morning but will enter Leo this afternoon and immediately apply to square Mercury in Scorpio. Meanwhile Venus is conjoining Saturn in Scorpio today, in a loose square to Jupiter in Leo.
For months now we’ve been looking at the square relationship between the Lion (Leo) and the Scorpion (Scorpio). Aside from the astrological analysis, if we step back and look at ourselves doing what we’re doing with these signs, it’s an amazing reminder of one of the simplest truths in astrology. The powers of the stars in the heavens were first imagined as animals of the earth. This simple fact alone can tell us all we need to know. That we even spend time trying to analyze the meaning of two animal powers in relationship to our minds, our emotions, and our relationships, is already beautiful beyond whatever analysis we come up with.
Sometimes it’s good to just zoom out and recognize what we’re actually doing in other words…we human beings painted animals in the stars and we see them in each other, in ourselves, in our hopes and fears and our dreams. We recognize these patterns of nature everywhere and we have the power to invoke and see them in the most mundane details of our lives.
I have to do this for myself as an astrologer a few times a week, or else I get chained into the literalisms of what I’m doing. I think it “really matters” or it’s “really serious,” and I forget the gravity of words like “animals” and “stars.”
So today’s star show features!…Venus and the Scorpion, Saturn and the Scorpion, the Sun and the Scorpion, Mercury and the Scorpion…..and Jupiter and the Lion…
Last night one of my students was working with a woman who had loads of Leo/Scorpio energy in her chart and she called her a “black panther.” She explained, “It’s like the pride of the lion meets the darkness of night.” A brilliant description.
Imagine that right now the pride of the Lion, the poise, the posture, the status, and the power are all on display…and yet it’s nighttime. Does the lion’s pride suffer when people can’t see it, or when it’s power is drenched in shadows? Does the lion need sunlight to feel strong, or is it comfortable moving under the moonlight?
A proud lion who can’t handle the dark hours is like a human being whose ego doesn’t know it’s limitations or the shadow it casts. On the other hand, a lion whose power only exists in the shadows may be afraid of its own brilliance, like the cowardly lion, or like a human being whose power is only maintained in shady or hidden environments. Is power really power if we don’t test it in the light of new places…places where we can’t remain easily cloaked or places where we aren’t as dominant?
A panther and a lion, testing each other’s borders.
We might ask ourselves, “do we feel like we’re not being seen and why?” On the other hand maybe it’s time for us to recede into the shadows a little bit more. Maybe it’s not our time to shine and the best thing we can do is accept our quiet fate and learn to hold our power in the dark jungles of lesser significance.
What are we hiding, what do we desire that is kept secret right now, and how do we learn to hold our desires with greater maturity, without the need for attention, instant gratification or public recognition?
On the other hand, again, where are we being timid, kept secret, afraid to show ourselves, and how can we learn to come out into the sunlight with greater courage?
Prayer: And then again let’s forget about all of this…zoom out once more and see what we’re doing….we’re looking at the animals in the stars…searching for their movements in the forests of our lives.
