Fishers Of Men: The Gospel Of An Ayahuasca Vision Quest.

With Adam Elenbaas

For centuries Amazonian shamans have used the sacred and
mind-expanding plant medicine, ayahuasca, to communicate with the
spirits of the forest, receive visions and heal the sick. In recent
years, ayahuasca has attracted spiritual seekers from the West who
journey to the Amazon to partake in traditional ceremonies.

Join authors Adam Elenbaas and Daniel Pinchbeck (“2012: The Return of
Quetzacoatl”) to celebrate the publication of Elenbaas’ remarkable
memoir, “Fishers of Men: The Gospel of an Ayahuasca Vision Quest.”
(Tarcher/ Penguin). At once a gritty coming of age story in the
tradition of The Basketball Diaries, and a psychedelic travelogue in the
line of authors like Terence McKenna, Jeremy Narby and Pinchbeck,
“Fishers of Men” is an unflinchingly honest story about the
transformational experience of drinking ayahuasca. This Reality Sandwich
event begins with a reading from the book, and is followed by a candid
discussion on the subject of ayahuasca shamanism and its relevance for
us today.

From his troubled youth in the American heartland, growing up a
preacher’s son in the Evangelical Christian Church, to his
experimentation with Pentecostalism and later his drug and sex-fueled
downward spiral in Chicago, Elenbaas examines with unusual insight, good
humor, and heart-breaking compassion his troubled relationship to his
father, his family, and his Christian faith. After a chance encounter
with psychedelic mushrooms at his grandfather’s cottage in rural
Michigan, Elenbaas begins on a voyage of self-discovery that leads him
to transformational visionary encounters with Jesus inside of ayahuasca
ceremonies in the depths of the Peruvian Amazon.

Karnival of Kuriocities

In these trying times it’s refreshing to know that there are still
some folks who know how to please a crowd.  Are you a closet voyeur?
All the better, please come!  The organizers of Karnival of Kuriocities
are among the rare few.  These folks always put on a memorable event.
Be prepared for some dangerous good times.  Revelers welcome.

In the age of the glamorous cirque-style spectacle, anarchy and
rebellion are often forgotten. The word “carnival” itself is associated
with scantily-clad showgirls, while its roots in the “carnal” are
neglected. This Friday, July 30th, we bring you the meat and the mayhem
that circus is made of. This disaster of a show will feature things
that aren’t even possible. (Unfortunately we had to comply with House
of Yes’ rules, and throw in a few  scantily clad showgirls anyways just
to keep ‘em happy.)  Starring:  Albert Cadabra – The Great Deceiver
who eats razor blades, hammers spikes into his face, and electrocutes
himself with 20,000 volts of electricity for fun.  Betty Bloomerz who
uses the snake like contortion of her mysterious innards to pull a
massive 27? sword blade deep into her petite 5?4? body amongst other
things.  Anya Sapozhnikova, everyone’s favorite whiskey guzzling
aerialist slut, (you might want to bring a date to see this stuff.)
Vermont Joy Parade is a six piece brass band hailing from Burlington
providing the dance party into the wee hours playing a fervent and
eclectic blend of old-time, blues, dixieland, Cajun, jug, and klezmer.

Climate Refugees

Presented by The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Green Screens.
Although climate change is a widely accepted phenomenon, few people have
given thought to what disappearing glaciers, changing weather
patterns, and rising sea levels will mean for the future. Michael
Nash’s award-winning documentary explores the troubling result of such
changes, centering on the mass migration of human populations. With
spectacular footage from across the globe, Climate Refugees sketches
out the scenario of displacement and upheaval. Nash’s film is a
fascinating and unnerving wake-up call. Michael Nash, USA, 2009, 83

The Lost Circus

Where circus meets dark cabaret with a steampunk twist. Presented by
Gemini & Scorpio.  The Circus is said to have started in ancient
Egypt when the court entertainers of an immortal Pharaoh escaped their
slavery under a midnight moon. They have traveled the globe for
centuries, gathering talent from every great empire as the empire itself
begins to crumble: Istanbul, Saint Petersburg, London, Berlin…and now
they have made it across the sea.  At the stroke of midnight, discover a
circus long lost. With music from times gone by or times that never
were: dark string fusion by Brooklyn’s own Copal and bohemian cabaret in
13 languages by Vagabond Opera – our special guests from Portland, OR.
And announcing our secret guest: circus composer Sxip Shirey, on his
last night before he leaves NYC.  The circus unfolds to the bands and in
between: mind-bending contortion by Jonathan Nosan, aerial dance by
Madeline Hoak; tribal fusion bellydance by Lauren Robbiani and special
guest Rio; fire & gorgeousness by Ali Luminescent; gypsy
fortunetelling by Kai Altair; an original installation & performance
by artist (and Minsky Sister) Kristen Rhea van Liew. A special dark
performance by the latex queen herself, The Baroness. Beautiful costumed
creatures perform feats of fire in the courtyard. Dusty circus visuals
set the mood. DJ sophybot fascinates your ears with a renegade circus
tent soundtrack. With your ever-dapper host, steampunk author G.D.
Falksen. Fanciful body artistry by AMBodyArt. Photo-op custom art
installation with works by Molly Crabapple and Kathleen Green.   Dress
code (required): dark cabaret, traveling circus, steampunk Victorian,
Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Mad Max, City of Lost Children.

Welcome to the: Life of Fire

TheDanger, 3rd Ward, Mister Saturday Night, Blk Market Membership and
The Lady Circus are combining forces to build an urban landscape of
sculpture lit by flames, riotous performance and all-night djs nestled
within three cavernous warehouses in the heart of Brooklyn.

The experience begins in a 117-year old former brewery, continues two
blocks away in three floors of a former furniture factory, and ends as
the sunrises over a former garment factory of two gorgeous floors and a
wide open courtyard.

Expect moments of beauty, glimpses of nudity, whispers from strangers
and that one perfect moment when you know you’ve met the love of your
life (hint: it’s New York City.)

The music evolves from the classic to the sublime with multiple lofts
filled with the best lofi-techno, dirty house, jump-up hip-hop, ambient
downtempo and the brashest live brass.

Arrive Early For: The Egyptian Lover and Afrika Bambaataa (!) The
forefathers of electro and hip-hop are playing the same stage for the
first time. This epic pair will be setting off the night at 10pm.  Icons
of music history and future, these men will amaze as they show a new
generation of music selectors how it’s done.

Stay All Night With: Mister Saturday Night with Justin Carter, Blk
Market Membership with Taimur and Fahad, dj Fflood with dark funk-house
fresh from the West Coast, local favorite Jesse Mann, a surprise
appearance from the “secret dj”, and the  sunrise ceremony set from Zemi

dome full of sight and sound featuring live ambient trip-hop by
Autophage, experimental downtempo from Borne, Ezekiel Honig, FutureBen
and DJ Tinseltown with visuals by the Housewives’ Guide To Anatomy,
Fuzzy Bastard plus special guests.

The daredevil beauties of the Lady Circus are orchestrating a Vermont
invasion, including live brass, backwoods funk and the all girl jug
band, Lady Tub, the mysteries of the Mickey Western Band, old-time folk
from Anna Pardenik and the loud, gorgeous cacophony of the Vermont Joy
Parade.

Dozens of performers will climb through the crowds, the ruins and the
sculpture that inhabit them as lead by Xango Shola along with the fire
mavens Sandhi Ferreira and Phoenix of Ashes.  Master builder Rosanna
Scimeca is creating a cathedral like entrance with an ornate steel, fire
and sound installation featuring the famed Gamelatron, the worlds first
full robotic Indonesian Gamelan.  Ice sculptors Josh Kalin and David
Sarussi will build a room of ice and flame live while Betty Brooklyn
servers liquor drenched sundaes and ice cream dreams.

All this and more this Saturday, July 31st…

There are moments in this city that seem almost impossible – when the the
dark sky is gorgeous, the music is intoxicating and New York City devolves
into that hedonistic adventure that we all live for. On this night there
will be fire, there will be fame and there will be a moment when the night
turns exquisitely out-of-control.

Church of Craft

Summer is sleepy. This summer seems to be no exception. I love it
when New York empties out on the weekends as overheated urbanites flee
to the beach or the woods. It somehow makes the city seem more
civilized. So if you are staying in town this weekend come join us for
some seriously civilized crafting. Etsy is cool and dry, your fellow
crafters are inspired and friendly, and you can spend some time doing
what makes you feel more like you: making things.  It is true, the
sewing machines have been fixed! The labs come equipped with your
basics: scissors, tape, pens, thread, but I encourage you to bring
supplies that you want to work with in addition to what is there. More
about the labs at: Etsy is all about encouraging people to make stuff,
just like us, so we get to have this special event craft-on every
month, where access to all of their goodies is totally free. If you
like it there you can go back and craft Monday evenings.  Our meeting
will be the usual casual drop in affair, come any time, bring anyone,
bring anything you are working on or come & just check out what
everyone else is up to. Snacks are welcome.

Making Your Roof Cool – NYC’s White Roof Painting Program

Sponsored by: Sierra Club Community Event Join us for a presentation
by John Kolp, Sierra Club’s NYC Cool Roof Program coordinator. Most of
the 1 billion+ square feet of roof surfaces in NYC is made of black tar
paper.   In hot summer months these black roofs will heat up to over
200 degrees.  Buildings absorb most of this heat and slowly release it
over night, contributing to the urban heat island effect.  Roofs coated
with highly reflective white paints reduce roof temperatures by 60 –
80 degrees. Columbia University researchers discovered a cool roof can
reduce air-conditioning costs by 50% in a one-story building and 25% in
a two-story building. Hear about options to support this program by
volunteering to paint roofs, getting your building’s roof painted
white,  and finding nonprofit groups willing to paint their roofs with
deeply discounted paint donated by the City. Refreshments will be
provided. Meet other Sierra Club members. Contact jlkolp@yahoo.com.

Evolver Energy Medicine: Chelation & Chakra Balancing with Jonathan Talat Phillips

Join Evolver co-founder Jonathan Talat Phillips on an evening journey
through the ancient art of energy healing.  In this workshop, we will
explore the foundational technique to Jonathan’s Chi Healing practice
–  “The Chelation.”  This is a potent hands-on-healing process that
enables the healer to:

Channel in energy through the hands, bringing healing frequencies to
where energy has been depleted in the client, Ground the client to the
vibrations of the earth, Balance the major chakras (energy centers) in
the body, open up areas where energy has been blocked, stagnant, or
stuck.  Strengthen and cleanse the entire auric field  We will learn all
the hand positions to this process, as well as how to open and close a
healing session. Each person will have the opportunity to both give
and receive a full chelation healing during this workshop, which means
we will leave feeling refreshed, vibrant, and relaxed by the end of the
workshop.  If you can, bring a yoga mat to lie on for receiving the
healing.  Anyone can learn to heal with energy, and all levels are
welcome.  This workshop will provide a safe container for everyone,

The Path of Deep Transformative Experience

With Kevin Sachs.  Do you attend experiential workshops and
ceremonies and have deep experiences, yet wonder if you could do more
to incorporate them into your life? Do you return home feeling
unsettled and “stirred up” and not know what to do? Do you wish you
could incorporate your experiences into one integrated life path that
uses them as a starting point for ongoing inner work and lasting
growth?  Experiential workshops, breathwork, shamanic journeys and
ceremonies, vision quests, sweat lodges, trance dances, ecstatic
chanting and intensive yoga or meditation retreats all involve working
in nonordinary states of consciousness. However, by themselves,
nonordinary states and experiences are just the beginning of a complete
and rewarding path. This talk will cover what nonordinary states are,
why they have the potential to move us toward healing and wholeness,
and how to work effectively with them. Topics will include Stan Grof’s
maps of consciousness, transpersonal and mystical experiences, working
with difficult emotional material, shadow work, the importance of
containment, set and setting, and the need for adequate preparation and
integration around the experiences. I will discuss methods I use to
prepare and integrate, including Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing. I will also
cover the archetypes of initiation, death and rebirth, and how
understanding these overarching themes helps us to work more effectively
with powerful experiences.  Kevin Sachs PhD has been on a spiritual
path for 38 years. He has a private practice in New York City where he
offers ongoing personal and emotional support for people who do
spiritual practice, support in preparing for and integrating deep,
transformative inner experiences, and support for people undergoing
psychospiritual crisis. Kevin is an advanced student of Holotropic
Breathwork™ at Grof Transpersonal Training. He is also studying to
certify as a Focusing Professional with Ann Weiser Cornell and Jane Bell
and studies shamanism with Jan Edl Stein and Kenn Day. He spent many
years studying Siddha Yoga Meditation with Swami Muktananda and Gurumayi
Chidvilasananda. Kevin offers individual sessions in New York City or

Evolver Spores: Day of Action

In just over one year, Evolver Spores have spread across the US and
abroad, carrying the seeds of a new planetary culture. More than 40
regional groups have sprouted up during these months, bringing together a
diverse, conscious community to explore topics critical to our time.
But Evolvers don’t simply meet and discuss; they take action in
manifesting the world they want to create. Over the past year, we’ve
seen the Regionals initiate alternative currencies, beach clean-ups,
healing circles, permaculture gardens, eco- festivals, the building of
Earthships, and more. For this month’s Spore, the entire Evolver network
will activate to create positive change in our communities. Join our
agents of transformation in coordinating river clean-ups, “renegade
gardening,” community foresting, assisting flood victims in Hungary, and
other ways we can be of service to our world.  (Special thanks to our
Spore sponsor, Tarcher/Penguin, publisher of RS author Adam Elenbaas‚
“Fisher’s of Men: The Gospel of an Ayahuasca Vision Quest.”)

))Call for Stories((

Call for Stories – The Unheard Voices Documentary Project

The Unheard Voices documentary project is seeking interviews and
testimonials from drug-related offenders and ex-offenders, and their
families, on the far ranging consequences of their criminal
convictions.  Inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Project, which
gathered video testimonies from survivors and other witnesses to the
Holocaust, the Unheard Voices documentary project is building an archive
of testimonies on the cultural holocaust that has been the War on
Drugs.  “No issue has had more impact on the criminal justice system in
the past three decades than national drug policy. The ‘war on drugs,’
officially declared in the early 1980s, has been the primary contributor
to the enormous growth of the prison system in the United States
during the last quarter-century and has affected all aspects of the
criminal justice system and, consequently, American society.” ~ The
Sentencing Project, “A 25 Year Quagmire: The ‘War on Drugs’ and its
Impact on American Society.” (2007)  If you or anyone in your family
has had a criminal conviction for a nonviolent drug-related offense, we
would like to hear about the lasting impacts to your lives, and how
you overcame your circumstances, or were permanently affected. Your
stories will help put a human face on a critical social issue that has
been overwhelmed by fear, politics, racial prejudice, and intolerance,
in an era where the public attitude has been, “out of sight, out of
mind.” When the stories hit home, the policies begin to change.  We
seek written testimonials and interview subjects for our video archive.
If you would like your voice to be heard please contact Director
Charles Shaw at charles.shaw@opendemocracy.net.  Unheard Voices is a
collaborative venture of the Exile Nation Project, openDemocracy and
the Tedworth Charitable Trust. Interviews & Testimonials will be
initially published on the openDemocracy Drug Policy Forum.

& Spirituality; Director – The Unheard Voices Documentary Project;
